Friends of Peachtree Hills Park Meeting
Tuesday May 4, 2010
Attending: Allison Barnett, Dana Burrell, Todd Edwards, Rhonda Gaunt, David Goldin, Betty Hanacek, Mikki Hubbard, Guy Hunt, Jeff Kirsch, Ron Loines, Lynn Saussy, Barbara Leaphart, Jim Leaphart, Kathleen Moriarty, Debbie Perdue, Mimi Seydel, Howard Shook, Brittany Wilson
The Friends of Peachtree Hills Park met at the park to celebrate receiving a $30,000 Park Pride grant and discuss how to raise the required matching funds. Landscape architect Lynn Saussy also presented her drawings of the proposed park improvements. The grant will help fund: 1) improving the entrance from the parking lot; 2) creating a natural “dry creek” area near the tennis courts that is now classified as a “ditch”; and 3) complete the walking trail.
Councilman Howard Shook was recognized for his help in getting the final plans approved by the various City of Atlanta departments.
Lynn Saussy was recognized for her untiring efforts (and multiple re-draws) of the park plans through the multi-year approval process.
Allison Barnett, Director of Operations for Park Pride, was recognized for her longtime and ongoing commitment to helping us secure grants, including the Park Pride grant.
Betty also announced the results of the recent fundraising activities: $525 for the yard sale (organized by Kathleen Moriarty and hosted by Janice Hall) and $60 for the plant sale (organized by Amy Linton).
We continue to sell personalized bricks (60 to date) to fund the flagpole plaza. Lynn will redraw the plan to reduce the cost of the plaza so we can begin construction and brick installation.
We discussed proposed fundraising ideas and added additional ones, including combining a silent auction with a wine tasting. We identified several neighbors with skills/services/products that people would likely bid on. Councilman Shook volunteered to have people bid on having lunch with him. We will schedule a fundraising “brainstorming” meeting soon.

Great news- in between the torrential rain, work has begun on the walking trail! A beautiful granite retaining wall is taking shape behind the bleachers, and we sold 10 more bricks, for a total of 30.
To recap- we were about $10,000 short to build the flagpole plaza (near the tennis courts) where the bricks will be installed. Selling 30 bricks at $50 each brings us $1,050 closer to our goal ($1,500-$450 cost of bricks).

The Friends of Peachtree Hills Park need to raise thousands of dollars to install walking paths, landscaping, a flagpole, benches and other amenities. You can be part of this effort, and have a lasting reminder of your donation by purchasing bricks that will be installed in the flagpole plaza (near the tennis courts & playground).

Peachtree Hills Park Update (3/24/2009)
On March 23, 2009, Friends of Peachtree Hills Park members and others met at the park. Lynn Saussy, project landscape architect, reviewed plans for the installation of walking paths. We walked the proposed paths and gave Lynn feedback that she will use to refine the plan. Click here to see the proposed plan for the first section of the paths to be installed.

Peachtree Hills Park Update (12/30/2007)
by Betty Hanacek
Several years ago, led by Fannie Schubert, neighbors got together to address the sad state of Peachtree Hills Park. They called themselves the “Friends of Peachtree Hills Park” and spent countless hours removing truckloads of kudzu, poison ivy and trash. They also secured funding for park improvements. Surveys were conducted which showed that the primary improvements neighbors wanted were paths to walk/run on, native/hardy landscaping, better lighting and benches. They were willing to give up one of the baseball backstops (research showed that the 2 ball fields were never used at the same time) in order to accommodate paths.
Of course, it was not an easy process. The “Friends” endured endless meetings and correspondence with City of Atlanta staff whose responsibility to manage parks for the broader community (including reserving the playing fields for non-Atlantans for a fee in order to generate revenue) was often at odds with what neighbors wanted. At long last, and with support from the PHCA Board, the plan was approved! (Click here to view the plan).
Before the plan can be implemented, though, the City must complete an important, long awaited creek bank restoration project, which involves complicated, almost endless City and Federal (the Feds have to approve anything involving waterways) bureaucracy. Once all the approvals are completed, heavy earth moving equipment will be brought in. Following completion of the creek bank restoration project, we can begin implementing the park improvements.
